If adopted, the County must hold a public hearing on its fixed license plate readers within 30 days, with options ranging from continued use to termination. At its Oct. 13 workshop, the County Commission advanced Resolution 26-10-012 by an 18-1 vote. The resolution, sponsored by Commissioners David Corwin and Roy Shields, calls for a public hearing on the County’s use of fixed license plate reader cameras. Full Commission meeting: Tuesday, Oct. 20 · 6:00 PM · Blount County Courthouse · Room 430 Freedom from Flock, a Blount County residents group, is organizing attendance and asking supporters to arrive by 5:45 PM. If adopted, the hearing must be held within 30 days. The Sheriff’s Office, the County Attorney, and members of the public would present, and the Commission would then consider whether to continue, restrict, suspend, or end the program. The resolution also asks County officials to give Commissioners the current ALPR agreements, policies, and data sharing terms before the hearing, and cites a petition of about 1,000 signatures asking that the cameras be removed. Knox County Commission voted Aug. 31 to ban fixed automatic license plate reader cameras. We continue to follow implementation of the adopted ordinance.

Kingston’s Flock contract will not be renewed.

Sullivan County suspended its use of Flock cameras.

The Flock issue remains active in Loudon County. Loudon County held a Commission workshop on Sept. 21. The issue remains under consideration.

Maryville City Council held its Flock camera work session on September 18. Council heard discussion about the City’s license plate reader program and concerns raised by residents. Residents can contact the Mayor and City Council, state their position, and ask that the Flock camera program be placed before the elected Council for a public vote.
